Survivors of domestic violence, child abuse, and coercive control are too often retraumatized—not just by their abusers, but by the very systems meant to protect them. Despite growing awareness of trauma’s impact on behavior and memory, countless judges, attorneys, and court-appointed professionals lack adequate training in trauma-informed principles.
This petition calls for mandatory, standardized trauma-informed education for all judges, attorneys, and legal representatives in family and criminal courts nationwide. This includes understanding the neurobiology of trauma, survivor credibility, coercive control, and the long-term effects of abuse—especially as they impact parental rights, custody, and courtroom conduct.
The justice system should be a place of protection, not punishment for survivors. It's time to close the gap between psychological truth and legal interpretation.
Sign to demand change. Protect survivors. Reform the courtroom. Justice should never come at the cost of re-traumatization.
